NEXT MEETING:  Tuesday –December 6, 2022

7 PM, Moke Hill Library/Archives

December 6, 2022, 7 PM.  Seed Keeper, by Diane Wilson.  Rosalie Iron Wing, a Dakota Sioux, grew up in the woods. Many years later, as the widow of her white husband, she returns to her childhood lands to find her identity, family and a community where she can belong.  She learns what it is like to be descended from women with souls of iron who have protected their families, their traditions, and a precious cache of seeds through generations of hardship and loss.

January 3, 2023, 7 PM.  47 Down, by O. Henry Mace.  This book honors the 100th anniversary of the horrific 1922 Argonaut mine disaster, one of the worst in U.S. history.  Forty-seven men were trapped in a fire 4,650 feet underground while the world above galvanized around their rescue.  Mine officials and workers, families and friends, and a phalanx of journalists from around the nation provide details of the extraordinary efforts to save them.  Mace tells the gripping story with a journalist’s eye, depending on extensive research into documents and first-hand accounts.  The story is an epic on its own, but particularly meaningful to us as the Argonaut is located in Jackson, California.
