August 2, 2022, 7 PM. The Sound of Language, by Amulya Malladi. Escaping warn-torn Kabul, Raihana settles with relatives in the cold, damp country of Denmark. In language school she struggles to learn Danish with its alien sounds. To improve her speaking skills, she apprentices to Gunnar, a reclusive widower, and they develop a friendship over the tending of his hives. The violence of her homeland, however, eventually finds her and she and Gunnar are forced to confront the ghosts of the past as they navigate an uncertain future.

October 4, 2022, 7 PM. Anxious People, by Fredrik Backman. An apartment open-house turns into a hostage situation when a failed bank robber bursts in and holds the attendees at gun point. The odd mix of people are soon identified as “the worst hostages in the world.”” Each with their own grievances and stories, they become reluctant allies when hidden truths about themselves set in motion a chain of events so unexpected that even they are surprised by the ending. Author Backman is a master of dialogue and plot, and author of award-winning novels Beartown and A Man Called Ove.
