NEXT MEETING: Tuesday –June 7, 2022
7 PM, Moke Hill Library/Archives
June 7, 2022, 7 PM. A Woman of No Importance, by Sonia Purnell. A WWII biography that reads like a thriller! Virginia Hall, a Baltimore socialite who talked her way into the British secret service, became one of the most revered – and targeted – of Churchill’s spies. She established a vast network of agents throughout France, working behind enemy lines to stoke the fires of the Resistance. Based on extensive research, this inspiring story of heroism, spycraft, and personal triumph was chosen as the best book of the year by NPR, NY Public Library, and the Times of London.
July 5, 2022, 7 PM. Pegasus in Flight, by Anne McCaffrey. Earth is at its darkest moment: the poor live hopeless lives and the privileged few enjoy immense luxury. Overpopulation leaves the only solution as colonization of distant planets, but the project is behind schedule. The rulers rely on Talents – telepaths who read minds, kenetics who manipulate matter, and precogs to whom the future is an open book. Then two children are discovered whose extraordinary psychic gifts have the potential to avert the looming catastrophe – or hasten its ominous arrival. Acclaimed author Anne McCaffrey has won both the Nebula and Hugo Awards for Science Fiction.
August 2, 2022, 7 PM. The Sound of Language, by Amulya Malladi. Escaping warn-torn Kabul, Raihana settles with relatives in the cold, damp country of Denmark. In language school she struggles to learn Danish with its alien sounds. To improve her speaking skills, she apprentices to Gunnar, a reclusive widower, and they develop a friendship over the tending of his hives. The violence of her homeland, however, eventually finds her and she and Gunnar are forced to confront the ghosts of the past as they navigate an uncertain future.
