NEXT MEETING:  Tuesday –November 2, 2021

7 PM, Moke Hill Library/Archives

November 2, 2021, 7 PM.  Nomadland, by Jessica Bruder.  The journalist author documents legions of older Americans who have hit the road as casualties of the 2008 financial crisis. In campers, RVs, vans, and trailers they travel the west from North Dakota to California to Texas looking for part-time employment.  In beautiful and scorching prose, Bruder reveals the dark underbelly of the US economy, at the same time celebrating the resilience and creativity of these modern pioneers who bond together for support.  The book has been made into an award-winning movie starring Frances McDormand.

December 7, 2021, 7 PM. Standing in the Rainbow, by Fannie Flagg.   From the author of “Fried Green Tomatoes….”, comes another story of richly drawn characters from the Missouri heartland.  Spanning from 1946 to the present, middle class and small town life are revealed though a cast of wacky and endearing characters. Bound together by Dorothy Smith’s ½-hour radio show, daily doings are chronicled in this time of optimism and prosperity.  It is a pleasurable dive into the reliably funny and heartfelt world of Fanny Flagg.

January 4, 2022, 7 PM.  Anansi Boys, by Neil Gaiman.  Fat Charlie Nancy’s normal life ended the moment his father dropped dead on a Florida karaoke stage.  Charlie didn’t know his dad was a god or that he had a brother.  Now brother Spider is on his doorstep, about to make Fat Charlie’s life more interesting … and a lot more dangerous.  Thrilling, spooky, delightful, and funny.  Best-selling British author Gaiman is famed for his fantasy fiction that is at once thought-provoking, mind boggling, brilliant, and absurd.
