We are doing a ZOOM meeting this month.  If you want to join the conversation, send an email to juliamokehill@gmail.com

January 5, 2021, 7 PM.  The Book of Joy, by the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, and Douglas Abrams., In April of 2015, His Holiness the Dalai Lame and Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa spent five days pondering the question: How do we find joy in the face of life’s inevitable suffering?  Both recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize, they talk about how sorrows and tragedies are only part of a world brimming with happiness.  Through stories, wisdom, spiritual beliefs, and science – punctuated by laughter, teasing, and tears – these men who have lived through the darkest of times show us ways to live in Joy.

February 2, 2021, 7 PM.  Martin Marten, by Brian Doyle.  The book’s title refers to Martin, who is a Marten (otter/mink-like animal).  His co-protagonist is Dave, a young human, backed up by his precocious younger sister, Maria.  Martin and Dave are both coming of age and their separate lives intersect during Dave’s runs in the woods, inspiring each to be curious about the other.  The late award-winning author Brian Doyle wrote of Oregon’s people and natural settings, and allows us to see the inspiring interconnectedness of life though his joyous and rollicking style.

March 2, 2021, 7 PM.  Rules of Magic, by Alice Hoffman.  Alice Hoffman has written a vastly popular series of magical romance books based on the lives of two witches.  The first novel, Practical Magic, was published in 1995 and made into a movie (which many enjoyed more than the book).  The prequel, Rules of Magic, follows the curse from 1620 to the modern time as Susanna Owens tries to keep her children from invoking the dark magic that has been passed down her line.
