We are doing a ZOOM meeting this month.  If you want to join the conversation, send an email to juliamokehill@gmail.com

December 1, 2020, 7 PM.  The Testaments, by Margaret Atwood.  This novel picks up some 15 years after events related in Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale (although it can be read on its own).  As the iron rule of the Republic of Gilead begins to show fissures, the lives three women intersect.  Two came of age in under the regime’s oppression of women and minorities; the third is one of the government’s agents.  Each must come to terms with who she is and how far she will go to defend her beliefs.  Winner of the Booker Prize.

January 5, 2021, 7 PM.  The Book of Joy, by the Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, and Douglas Abrams., In April of 2015, His Holiness the Dalai Lame and Archbishop Desmond Tutu of South Africa spent five days pondering the question: How do we find joy in the face of life’s inevitable suffering?  Both recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize, they talk about how sorrows and tragedies are only part of a world brimming with happiness.  Through stories, wisdom, spiritual beliefs, and science – punctuated by laughter, teasing, and tears – these men who have lived through the darkest of times show us ways to live in Joy.
