July 7, 2020, 7 PM. The Feast of All Saints, by Anne Rice. This historical novel explores a hidden world of New Orleans after the Civil War. The mixed-race population – from French, white, black, and Native American roots — developed their own society of artists, poets, scientists, and craftsmen that reached far beyond their domain. Marcel, the blue eyed scholar, Marie his fair-skinned sister, Christophe the writer, and Anna Bella the seductresses: all with rich and compelling stories.
August 3, 2020, 7 PM. Year of Wonders, by Geraldine Page. When an infected bolt of cloth carries plague from London to an isolated village, a housemaid named Anna Frith emerges as an unlikely heroine and healer. Through Anna’s eyes we follow the story of the fateful year of 1666, as she and her fellow villagers confront the spread of disease and superstition. Inspired by the true story of Eyam, a village in the rugged hill country of England, Year of Wonders is a richly detailed evocation of a singular moment in history.
September 1, 2020, 7 PM. Prague Sonata, by Bradford Morrow. In the early days of the new millennium, pages of a worn and weathered original sonata manuscript come into the hands of Meta Taverner, a young musicologist. The music rendered there is clearly the undiscovered composition of a master. Meta must attempt to find the manuscript’s true owner and to make the three-part sonata whole again. Leaving New York behind for the land of Dvorák and Kafka, Meta soon realizes that she isn’t the only one after the music’s secrets.
