NEXT MEETING:  Tuesday – November 5, 2019, 7 PM, Moke Hill Library/Archives

November 5, 2019.  Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury.  This award-winning novel from 1953 imagines a future society where books are outlawed and destroyed by “firemen” tasked with starting, not extinguishing, fires (F. 451 is the temperature at which book paper burns). All information is provided by government-controlled television.  Fireman Guy Montag meets an eccentric neighbor who introduces him to a past where people didn’t live in fear and to a present where books open doors to extraordinary realms.  When discovered hiding forbidden books in his home, the fireman has to run for his life.

December 3, 2019Skipping Christmas, by John Grisham; and A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens.  A double header for Christmas! A classic to warm our hearts with favorite memories of Ebenezer Scrooge, Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit, and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. And a classic tale for modern times, as Skipping Christmas offers a hilarious look at the chaos and frenzy of holiday traditions when the Kranks decide to flee the holidays.  Enormous consequences ensue.

January 7, 2020.  Orange is the New Black, by Piper Kerman.  With a degree from Smith College, a career, and a boyfriend, well-heeled Piper Kerman’s reckless youth catches up with her.   Convicted of delivering a suitcase of drug money ten years before, she is sentenced to fifteen months at a federal correctional facility.  Kerman learns to navigate this new world, meeting women from all walks of life, who surprise her with small tokens of generosity, hard words of wisdom, and simple acts of acceptance. Heartbreaking, hilarious, and at times enraging, Kerman’s story offers a rare look into the lives of women in prison, inspiring an award-winning Netflix series.
