Moke Hill READS Book Club

 NEXT MEETING:  Tuesday – September 3, 2019, 7 PM, Moke Hill Library/Archives

September 3, 2019.  Luncheon of the Boating Party, by Susan Vreeland.  The novel focuses on Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s masterpiece painting depicting people enjoying a summer Sunday on a café terrace along the Seine. Narrated by Renoir and seven of the models, Vreeland illuminates the gusto, hedonism, and art of an era where individuals from many classes could socialize together. With a gorgeous palette of vibrant, captivating characters, Vreeland paints their lives, loves, losses, and triumphs so vividly that the painting literally comes alive.

October 1, 2019.  The Killing Floor, by Lee Child.  If you haven’t read any of the fast-paced and tightly written “Jack Reacher” novels, you are in for a treat.  If you are already a fan, come and tell us why. In this first adventure (1997), ex-military policeman and drifter Jack Reacher is just passing through Margrave, Georgia, when in less than an hour he’s arrested for murder. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody, at least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. And yet …..

November 5, 2019.  Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury.  This award-winning novel from 1953 imagines a future society where books are outlawed and destroyed by “firemen” tasked with starting, not extinguishing, fires (F. 451 is the temperature at which book paper burns). All information is provided by government-controlled television.  Fireman Guy Montag meets an eccentric neighbor who introduces him to a past where people didn’t live in fear and to a present where books open doors to extraordinary realms.  When discovered hiding forbidden books in his home, the fireman has to run for his life.
