Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card.  Earth is under attack and survival of humanity depends on a military genius – a child who has been trained since birth.  While Andrew “Ender” Wiggin thinks he is playing computer simulated war games, he is in fact waging war on alien attackers.  Winner of both Hugo and Nebula awards, this work among the most influential science fiction novels of the 1980s. .  When we searched for “best science fiction book for non-science fiction readers” this came up tops on three sites. Give it a try!

March 7, 2017.  News of the World, by Paulette Jiles.  In 1870s’ Texas, retired Civil War Veteran Captain Kidd, age 70, travels from town to town presenting readings from East Coast newspapers.  He is persuaded to transport 10-year-old Johanna, orphaned and held captive by Koiwa, 400 miles to her aunt and uncle.  Thus begins an epic Western adventure filled with danger and survival, told by the award-winning author who also supplies a soul.
