Come to talk about books and listen to others –

The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey, by Rinker Buck.

An modern epic account of traveling the 2,000-mile length of the Oregon Trail the old-fashioned way—in a covered wagon with a team of mules.  Rinker and his eccentric brother Nick are accompanied by a Jack Russell terrier and three mules with distinctive personalities. The trip is shadowed by diaries and accounts from the 1840s – 1860s. Simultaneously a majestic journey across the West, a significant work of history, and a laugh-out-loud masterpiece. (Travel Adventure)

February 7, 2017Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card.  Earth is under attack and survival of humanity depends on a military genius – a child who has been trained since birth.  While Andrew “Ender” Wiggin thinks he is playing computer simulated war games, he is in fact waging war on alien attackers.  Winner of both Hugo and Nebula awards, this work among the most influential science fiction novels of the 1980s.

March 7, 2017.  News of the World, by Paulette Jiles.  In 1870s’ Texas, retired Civil War Veteran Captain Kidd, age 70, travels from town to town presenting readings from East Coast newspapers.  He is persuaded to transport 10-year-old Johanna, orphaned and held captive by Koiwa, 400 miles to her aunt and uncle.  Thus begins an epic Western adventure filled with danger and survival, told by the award-winning author who also supplies a soul.
