Irene in Huffington Post

Moke Hill resident Irene Perbal made a splash this weekend in the Huffington Post. A few years ago, with sponsorship by the Jackson Rotary Club, Irene took solar cookers — simple contraptions made essentially of cardboard and foil — to Brasilia, capital of Brazil, teaching underserved populations there how to make the cookers, and cook meals without electricity.
After returning home to Moke Hill, she was approached by people serving the homeless and others in need in Calaveras and Amador counties. She has been training staff and outreach agents, doing demonstrations, taking the cookers to local and international conferences, showing people how to cook up a hot meal with little more than the sun, a simple cooker and a black pot.
